Providence Soul Care exists to make the GOSPEL unignorable in our city through counseling God's word. We offer individual and marriage counseling that applies God's sufficient Word to suffering, sin, conflict, grief, and spiritual growth as we help one another grow to maturity in Christ.

This is accomplished through counseling God's word with individuals and couples, as well as equipping those in the church to counsel God's word in a variety of situations. The Soul Care ministry exists in the culture of mutual care and discipleship in place in our membership.

Currently, Soul Care is prioritized to PCC members and regular attendees. If you are interested in counseling, you can fill out this form or email soulcare@providencetx.org, and a member of our team will connect with you to talk about next steps and the possibility of receiving counseling with Soul Care.

"What is soul care or biblical counseling?"

Here are some frequently asked questions about biblical counseling, and our specific process. If you have a question about counseling that isn't listed here, send an email to soulcare@providencetx.org and a member of our team will answer your question.

What is soul care or biblical counseling?

Biblical counseling (often called “soul care”) is personal, Scripture-based help for real-life struggles—questions, suffering, conflict, anxiety, addictions, grief, patterns of sin, and more. It is “counsel” (help for the whole person) that is “biblical” (rooted in God’s word and dependent on God’s Spirit).

Our aim is to help you know and trust Christ, interpret your situation through the lens of Scripture, and take wise, loving steps of obedience and faith—while being encouraged by God’s faithfulness and the care of the church.

Biblical counseling is not medical care, psychiatry, psychology, or licensed professional counseling/therapy. We do not diagnose mental illness or provide clinical treatment. When medical or specialized care is needed, we encourage and support you in pursuing it while also providing spiritual care.

What is the process like? What happens in sessions?

Counseling usually begins with learning your story and understanding the concerns you want help with. From there, we work to address both suffering and sin the way Scripture does—by paying attention to the heart (our loves, fears, beliefs, desires, and worship) and applying the gospel to everyday life.

A typical session includes prayer, conversation and questions, time in Scripture, and practical next steps. Most counselees also receive “homework” (such as specific Scriptures to read and meditate on, reflection questions, or small obedience steps) to help counseling move from the meeting to daily life.

Sessions are scheduled as availability allows—often weekly at first, then every other week as progress is made. When appropriate, counselors coordinate with church leadership (and sometimes spouses or other key relationships) to encourage ongoing discipleship and care outside of sessions.

How much does it cost? Do you take insurance?

For members of Providence, Soul Care Counseling is provided free of charge as part of the church’s ministry. For non-members, the fee is $75 per session.

We do not accept insurance and are not able to provide documentation for insurance reimbursement.

Who is counseling for?

Soul Care is for anyone seeking biblical help with suffering, relational challenges, anxiety, habits of sin, grief, anger, parenting or marriage struggles, and spiritual discouragement/dryness.

Who are the counselors?

Our counselors are trained members of Providence who provide care under the oversight of church leadership. All counselors are trained for their level of counseling, ranging from lay counselors to counselors certified through the Association of Biblical Counselors (ABC).

Can I become a Soul Care counselor?

Yes! Training is offered periodically for lay counselors, certified counselors, and enrichment classes. Currently, these are only offered to members of Providence Community Church. If you are interested in becoming a counselor for Soul Care, and/or the options for training, contact the Pastor of Spiritual Formation: eric@providencetx.org.

Is what I share confidential?

We treat counseling conversations with care and discretion. Because counseling is a ministry of the local church, there are limited situations where we may need to involve appropriate church leadership to provide wise care—especially in cases of safety concerns, abuse, harm to self/others, or serious unrepentant sin that requires pastoral involvement. Additionally, as one transitions care back into the body, conversations will be had so that care can continue when counseling ceases.

How do I get started?

You can fill out this interest form or email soulcare@providencetx.org.

How long does counseling last?

The length varies by situation. Some concerns are addressed in a handful of meetings; others may take longer. Our goal is steady, meaningful progress— not a quick fix.

Do you counsel non-Christians?

We’re glad to meet with anyone who is willing to hear and engage with Scripture. Biblical counseling is explicitly Christian and gospel-centered, so our counsel will always be shaped by the Bible and point to Christ.

Do you offer marriage counseling?

Yes. We counsel couples using Scripture to address conflict, communication, forgiveness, patterns of sin, and rebuilding trust.

Do you counsel children or teens?

Yes, typically with parent/guardian involvement. Our policy mandates an advocate in the room at all times with children and teens during all counseling sessions.

What if I’m already seeing a therapist or taking medication?

You can still receive biblical counseling. We’re not here to compete with medical or clinical care. When appropriate, we encourage you to continue receiving needed medical support while we focus on spiritual care, wise living, and walking by faith.

What kinds of issues are outside your scope?

We are not equipped to provide emergency services or clinical mental health treatment. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a crisis, call 911 (or your local emergency number) or seek immediate professional help. We can help you connect to appropriate resources and still offer spiritual care.

Is there homework?

Yes—usually Scripture reading/meditation, reflection questions, and specific steps of obedience. Counseling tends to be most fruitful when sessions are paired with regular, intentional follow-through between meetings.

Counseling is simply a means of care. Our current culture gives us a myriad of different resources to help "fix ourselves" while at the same time affirming that we are "perfect" just the way we are. The Bible offers us a different perspective;

We are broken sinners in need of grace.

God's wisdom in Scripture focuses our hearts on Christ and gives us a greater dependence on his provision. Wisdom calls us to love others. Wisdom dethrones self as the center of the universe while exalting God. Wisdom, in other words, provokes worship, which is our life's purpose. Worship of God leads us to transformation.

In this way, the Word of God is creative and recreative; it is "living and active" (Hebrews 4:12) and has authority in the believer's life.

Counseling with Providence Soul Care involves coming to terms with God's mercy extended to us through Christ Jesus. It is dependent on the Word of God, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the grace of Jesus.

Through Biblical Counseling, we look to assist and care for people as they fix their eyes on Christ.  We hope that through Biblical counseling, the Lord meets you and grows in you in his image and likeness.
