We invite you to go deeper in the sermon text through personal study. If you have not yet been able to hear Pastor Joseph's sermon titled, the Presence of God you can listen online here.
These are all the passages mentioned in the sermon. As you take time for personal study, be sure to explore each passage in it's context. Where just one verse was referenced, zoom out to read the full chapter or surrounding texts to give you a clearer view of the context and meaning of each passage. We recommend taking one or two of these portions of scripture to study each day to assist you as you work on applying the sermon to your life.
Ezekiel 36:22-29 (26,27)
2 Corinthians 3:12-18
2 Corinthians 3, 4, 5
If I woke up tomorrow morning and found that all that the Bible teaches concerning prayer and the Holy Spirit were removed (not as a liberal would remove it, by misinterpretation, but really removed) what difference would it make in practice from the way we are functioning today? The simple tragic fact is that in much of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ – the evangelical Church – there would be no difference whatsoever. - Francis Schaeffer from the book, True Spirituality
Here are seven questions here to help you work on your personal application of the sermon.
One way to work through these questions is to answer them now, before you begin your personal study. This will allow you to get your most honest, raw answers. Then, towards the end of the week, work through the questions again to see how the Spirit has changed your perspective as you work through His Word this week.
Another option is to take one question per day as you explore the scriptures and pray.
In what ways have you been more interested in what God does for you and/or what he asks of you than you are in knowing who God is?
What are some ways you need to work on seeking and acknowledging the presence of God in your life?
How does it change the way you look at your life to know that the Spirit of God Himself dwells inside of you all day every day?
Pastor Joseph made the statement that "All of our depth and meaning for life is found in the person of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit." In what ways are you seeking to live in this truth throughout your daily life?
In what ways have you been guilty of trying to do the Christian life on your own and not through the power of the Holy Spirit at work in your life? (Be specific)
Are there certain sins or struggles that you have been trying to overcome on your own? Spend some time in prayer over these each day.
What are you doing this week to live in a way that is completely dependent on the Holy Spirit and not on yourself?
Our prayer is that this sermon study guide will help you in your spiritual growth. As you read and pray through these passages, we encourage you to take your study into community as well. Talk to your friends and family about what you are learning and make sharing your faith by the power of the Holy Spirit a part of your growth in Him.
