1 John Series: Introduction & Prayers

This Fall we will be studying the book of 1 John in a series called Light & Love Anchored Together in Christ.

1 John was written from Ephesus sometime between AD 80-95. Most likely it was written to churches in Asia Minor (modern day Turkey).

The book never mentions its author's name, but many people believe it was written by the apostle John.

Why Was 1 John Written?

Four reasons are given in the book of 1 John as to why the author was writing this letter.

These reasons can be found in the following passages:

  • 1 John 1:4

  • 1 John 2:1

  • 1 John 2:26

  • 1 John 5:13

Reading these passages can help you understand why this book was written, and help you watch for key themes as we study this book together.

Prayers for This Sermon Series

We ask that you would join our Elders and staff in praying for the series, and our entire church body. Here are a few things we are praying specifically during this series:

  • That we would all listen to the words of 1 John and examine our hearts

  • That Christians would be assured of their standing in Jesus

  • That people who don't yet know Christ would have their eyes opened to the gospel and be lead to repentance.

  • That God would work in our hearts to change and grow each of us into His own likeness.

  • That we would not shy away from honestly looking at our lives and hearts, even when the scriptures reveal difficult truths.

  • That the joy that comes from truly knowing Christ would be present in our church and our lives.
